This weekend we lit our first fire of the season and I couldn't be happier. We spend so much time in this room and adding additional life to the space makes us want to linger more.
Having a fireplace feels like such a luxury and when I decorate spaces with them it causes me to pause and imagine how I can make the most of them, both aesthetically and functionally.
The default tends to lean on symmetry, flanking the space with two sofas or club chairs, but I love to play with asymmetry and capture premium real estate next to the warm fire.
But I feel ready to push the envelope even more. I love spaces that aren't perfect...that feel a bit off in the very best way. Using a fireplace as a starting point to create a welcoming and safe landing pad (verses just using it to create perfect symmetry) sounds appealing. Below are two spaces that do just that and I'm itching to create one myself.
The first is Ben Pentreath's sitting room and the second is Gavin Houghton's drawing room. Magical.
Are you ready to rethink your fireplace room?
